Why Nursing & Midwifery Council-aligned communication practice matters
Communication sits at the centre of safe, person-centred nursing care. The NMC's Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses set out the skills, knowledge and attributes every registered nurse must demonstrate, grouped under seven platforms covering accountable practice, health promotion, assessment, care planning and delivery, leadership, safety, and coordinating care.

Supporting Simulated Practice Learning in nursing curricula
The NMC has made simulated practice learning (SPL) a permanent feature of pre-registration nursing education, allowing up to 600 of the 2,300 required practice learning hours to be delivered through simulation. The NMC defines simulation as an educational method that develops knowledge, behaviours and skills through repetition, feedback, evaluation and reflection, and its own evaluation of SPL found that it "offers contextualised, authentic practice learning that allows students to practise and reflect in a safe environment, enhancing competence and supporting confidence."
The NMC is specific about what counts, though. Simulated practice must be contextualised and supervised to reflect practice with real people, with an appropriately prepared practice supervisor present. A workbook, a video, or a genuinely unsupervised exercise doesn't meet that definition.
Many universities already structure SPL delivery around a mix of facilitated and hybrid virtual placements that allow for asynchronous learning and meet the NMC regulatory standards.
