What is a simulated headwall?

A simulated headwall (called a bedhead trunking unit in UK hospitals) replicates the gas outlet panel found at the head of a hospital bed. It provides DISS-compatible outlets for simulated oxygen, medical air, and vacuum suction. Nursing students use these units to practise gas delivery, flowmeter operation, and suction procedures in a realistic clinical environment.

Simulation headwalls are standard equipment in nursing programmes across UK universities, NHS simulation centres, and private healthcare training providers. They allow students to build clinical competence before working with real patients on placement.

Functioning vs non-functioning simulation headwalls

Non-functioning headwalls have DISS outlets, flowmeters, and vacuum regulators that replicate the look and feel of hospital equipment without delivering gas flow. They suit programmes focused on patient assessment, documentation, medication administration, and bedside care. They do not require a compressor or power supply.

Functioning headwalls connect to a silent air compressor to deliver active simulated oxygen, medical air, and suction through the DISS outlets. They suit programmes where students need to set oxygen flow rates, connect nasal cannulae, and operate suction equipment under realistic conditions.

What is included with each headwall?

Each unit ships as a complete bundle. A typical setup includes the headwall panel, oxygen flowmeter (15 LPM), air flowmeter (15 LPM), vacuum regulator, suction canister with mounting ring, humidifier bottle, nasal cannula with tubing, and suction tubing. Functioning models also include a silent air compressor and DISS hose with fittings.

Specifications

Our simulation headwalls are constructed from high-impact plastic with metal fittings. Wall-mounted installation takes minutes with no permanent construction required. Axis units carry a 3-year limited warranty.
