Description

Chest Drain and Needle Decompression Trainer

Designed for functional realism, it replicates the feel of skin, fat, and muscle layers, offering the right resistance during incision and dissection.

The pleura layer is engineered to tear with realistic force, and the model can be pressurised to produce an audible air hiss during decompression. A visible lung helps demonstrate correct placement and highlight possible complications such as pleural injury.

The rotatable skin allows multiple procedures per consumable, making it suitable for repeated practice and skills assessment. All key parts are replaceable, extending the trainer’s lifespan and reducing ongoing costs - a simple, effective solution for mastering chest procedures without the high price tag.

Features

  • The skin can be cut multiple times (estimated 30 cuts per skin) with almost no preparation time - simply rotate it to expose a fresh area. No incision marks are predefined, allowing learners to locate landmarks themselves.
  • Pressurised air system - Built-in mechanism releases air during needle decompression, simulating the tension relief of a pneumothorax.
  • Realistic pleura tear - The pleural layer is engineered to puncture and tear with lifelike force, helping learners recognise correct technique.
  • Visible lung - Internal lung component makes it possible to observe placement and identify potential injury.

About Chest Drains

Chest drains are used in many different hospital settings and doctors in most specialties need to be capable of their safe insertion. Incorrect placement of a chest drain can lead to significant morbidity and even mortality.

A chest drain is a tube inserted through the chest wall between the ribs and into the pleural cavity to allow drainage of air (pneumothorax), blood (haemothorax), fluid (pleural effusion) or pus (empyema) out of the chest. In any one patient, it is essential to understand what the drain is aiming to achieve.

The effective drainage of air, blood or fluid from the pleural space requires an adequately positioned drain and an airtight, one-way drainage system to maintain subatmospheric intrapleural pressure. This allows the drainage of the pleural contents and re-expansion of the lung. Pneumothorax or haemothorax can help restore haemodynamic and respiratory stability by optimising ventilation/perfusion and minimising mediastinal shift.
